Who they were
Jeanne-Antide Thouret was born into a poor farming family at Sancey-le-Long on 27 November 1765. Her mother died when she was sixteen and she took her place at home and in the fields, finding a mother in the Virgin Mary.
Her religious life was broken off by the French Revolution; with companions she took it up again at Besançon, founding the Sisters of Charity for the Christian and civic formation of the young and for charity to abandoned children, the poor and the sick.
