Who they were
The passion of the blessed martyrs Ignatius de Azevedo, priest, and thirty-eight companions of the Society of Jesus, who, while they were making their way to the missions in Brazil on a ship called the Saint James, were attacked by pirates and, in hatred of the Catholic religion, run through with sword and lance. Among those named is another Blessed João Fernandes, religious of the Society of Jesus.

As a martyr he was raised to the altars without a miracle.
Why that counted as sanctity
The Roman Martyrology remembers him on 15 July among the companions of Blessed Ignatius de Azevedo, run through with sword and lance by pirates on the way to the missions in Brazil.
