Who they were
Johann Nepomuk von Tschiderer, fifth of seven children of the Tyrol's receiver-general, was born at Bolzano on 15 April 1777 and ordained there on 27 July 1800. He was a curate, a professor of theology at Trent, parish priest of Merano from 1819 and pro-vicar for the German-speaking part of the diocese.
As Bishop of Trent he governed with evangelical ardour and humanity, and in time of disaster gave wonderful witness of love for his flock.
