Who they were

John, a Roman priest of St Clement's, called Mercurius, was probably the first pope to change his name on election, in January 533, at a time when simony in papal elections was rife.

He died on 8 May 535 and was buried in St Peter's.

The miracles

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
