John of Capistrano
Franciscan friar and Catholic saint (1386–1456)
Feast: 23 October (current Roman calendar, optional memorial) · 28 March (1962 Missal, III class)
Who they were
John was born at Capestrano in the Abruzzo, son of a German baron, studied law at Perugia and became a jurist and governor of the city. Imprisoned when the Malatesta took Perugia, he heard God's call in prison and became a Franciscan priest.
A fiery preacher, he befriended St Bernardino of Siena and defended him against charges of heresy over his devotion to the Name of Jesus, fought the heretical Fraticelli and reformed his Order, earning the name 'pillar of the Observance'. After Constantinople fell in 1453, Pope Nicholas V sent him to Central Europe; he raised an army among the Hungarians and led five thousand men to relieve the siege of Belgrade by Mehmed II. He died later that year, 1456.
The miracles
He is patron of military chaplains. The miracles examined for his canonisation are not described in the sources we have used.
Why that counted as sanctity
John gave his gifts as preacher and leader wholly to the Gospel, renewing the faith of whole towns and, at the end, defending Christian Europe in person.
