John of Ravenna

Who they were

At Ravenna, Saint John, bishop, who, while the whole of Italy was being laid waste by the war with the Lombards, provided excellently for the needs of the Church, as Saint Pope Gregory the Great attests, who sent him the book of the Pastoral Rule.

The miracles

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.

Why that counted as sanctity

The Roman Martyrology remembers him on 19 January as a bishop of Ravenna who provided for the needs of the Church while Italy was laid waste by the Lombard war.
