Who they were

At Valence in the territory of Vienne in France, Saint John, bishop, who, formerly abbot of Bonnevaux, suffered many hardships in defence of justice and with charity took care of the peasants, the poor and the merchants ruined by debt.

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.

Why that counted as sanctity

The Roman Martyrology remembers him on 21 March as a bishop, formerly abbot of Bonnevaux, who suffered for justice and cared for peasants, the poor and merchants ruined by debt.
