Who they were
John Pibush, born at Thirsk, was ordained at Reims in 1587 and sent to England. Arrested in 1593, he was tried, escaped from Gloucester gaol, and was recaptured the next day.
Condemned for being a priest in 1595, he spent more than five years in prison before the sentence was suddenly carried out at St Thomas's Waterings on 18 February 1601.
