John Rochester

Who they were

John Rochester, of an Essex family, was a Carthusian monk of the London Charterhouse who strongly opposed the new doctrine of the royal supremacy.

Arrested and sent to the Charterhouse at Hull, he was taken to York and hanged in chains there on 11 May 1537, with his fellow Carthusian James Walworth.

The miracles

As a martyr he was raised to the altars without a miracle.

Why that counted as sanctity

A Carthusian who died rather than accept the king as head of the Church.
