Who they were
Jan Sarkander was born at Skoczów in Silesia on 20 December 1576. After his father's death the family moved to Příbor in Moravia; he studied at the Jesuit college in Olomouc, at Prague and at Graz.
From 1616 parish priest of Holešov and confessor to the lieutenant of Moravia, he refused to break the seal of confession, was racked, and died in prison a month later on 17 March 1620.
