José Garrido Francés

Who they were

José Garrido Francés was born at Villaherreros on 11 October 1893, made solemn profession and was a priest from 1918. When the persecution began he showed great courage, keeping watch at night with some of his brethren in the porter's room of a convent of Dominican sisters and speaking with the soldiers himself; he was killed in 1936, and Pope Francis beatified him on 18 June 2022.

As a martyr he was raised to the altars without a miracle.

Why that counted as sanctity

He was put to death in 1936 in the persecution in Spain, and the Church recognised his death as martyrdom.
