Who they were
José Vargas Nevado, of Villaviciosa, was born in 1902 and was one of the lay men of the diocese of Córdoba put to death in the persecution of the Church in Spain, suffering martyrdom on 31 August 1936. He was beatified on 16 October 2021 by Pope Francis among Juan Elías Medina and 126 companions of the diocese of Córdoba.
