Priest of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, martyr of the persecution in Spain
Who they were
José Vergara Echeverría was born on 18 June 1908 at Almandoz in Navarre, entered the Pequeña Obra in 1921 and was ordained priest on 24 February 1934, then assigned to the community of Canet de Mar as teacher and formator; he was a man of good character, open and high-minded, and deeply convinced of his mission.
Pope Francis beatified him on 6 May 2017 among the Spanish martyrs of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
