Joseph Gérard
French Catholic missionary (1831-1914)
Feast: 29 May (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
Jean Joseph Gérard was born on 2 March 1831 at Bouxières-aux-Chênes near Nancy and grew up on the family farm. Moved by accounts of the missions, in 1851 he joined the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate; St Eugène de Mazenod ordained him deacon and sent him, at 22, to Natal.
Ordained priest at Pietermaritzburg on 19 February 1854, he began among the Zulu and then, above all in Basutoland (Lesotho), proclaimed Christ tirelessly until his death on 29 May 1914.
