Juan de Palafox y Mendoza
Spanish Roman Catholic archbishop and Viceroy of New Spain (1600-1659)

Who they were
Juan de Palafox y Mendoza was born at Fitero, Navarre, on 24 June 1600, educated by the Bishop of Tarazona and the Jesuits, and studied at Huesca, Alcalá and Salamanca. In 1621 he governed his father the Marquis's estates.
In 1639 he was named Bishop of Puebla de los Ángeles in New Spain, with great offices of government, and later Bishop of Osma. Court councillor, royal visitor, defender of the Indians, viceroy, patron of the arts, prolific writer and zealous bishop.
The miracles
He was beatified in Burgo de Osma cathedral. The Dicastery's biography does not describe the miracles approved in the cause.
Why that counted as sanctity
A statesman-bishop who defended the Indians and served his dioceses with zeal.
