Who they were
Juan Grande Román was born at Carmona near Seville on 6 March 1546 to a deeply Christian family; his father, a craftsman, died when he was eleven. He sang as a choirboy in his parish.
Joining the Hospitaller Order of St John of God, he stood out for his charity to prisoners, the abandoned and the outcast, and died of the plague caught while nursing the sick.
