Who they were
Jurgis Matulaitis was born on 13 April 1871 at Lūginė, Lithuania, the last of eight children; orphaned at ten, he worked in the fields for his elder brother. He studied at Kielce, Warsaw and St Petersburg, where he was ordained on 20 November 1898.
He took vows as a Marian on 29 August 1909 and on 14 July 1911 became Superior General; to avoid the tsar's police he went to Switzerland. He founded the Poor Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, was Bishop of Vilnius and then apostolic nuncio in Lithuania.
