Who they were
Laura del Carmen Vicuña Pino was born in Santiago de Chile on 5 April 1891. Her father died when she was two, and she moved with her mother to Argentina, where she went to the Salesian Sisters' school. In 1902 she privately vowed poverty, chastity and obedience.
Cheerful but brave enough to face the violent designs of a man who preyed on her, at thirteen she offered her life to God for her mother's conversion. She died on 22 January 1904, the most generous and best-loved girl in the school.
