Who they were
Leo, a Sicilian, was elected pope in 681 and consecrated on 17 August 682. The chief act of his short pontificate was to confirm the Sixth Ecumenical Council, which condemned the Monothelite heresy.
Described by his biographer as just and learned, he died on 28 June 683 and is commemorated as a saint in the Roman Martyrology.
