Who they were
Bruno of Egisheim, of a noble and pious family, showed a tender conscience from childhood. As Bishop of Toul he was a pastor for many years before being made pope in 1049.
He fought simony and clerical incontinence and travelled across Europe for the reform of morals, earning the name 'apostolic pilgrim'. He died a most edifying death at Rome on 19 April 1054, a worker of miracles in life and death.
The miracles
There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
Why that counted as sanctity
A reforming pope who travelled Europe to renew the Church.
