Who they were

In Calabria, Saint Leo, hermit, who gave himself to contemplation and to good works for the poor, and died at Africo near Reggio in the monastery he had himself founded.

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.

Why that counted as sanctity

The Roman Martyrology remembers him on 5 May as a hermit in Calabria who gave himself to contemplation and to good works for the poor and died in the monastery he had founded at Africo.
