Leodegar

Who they were

Leodegar (Léger), of noble birth, was ordained by his uncle, the Bishop of Poitiers, and became abbot of St-Maixent, introducing the Rule of St Benedict. Queen Bathilde called him to court, and he became Bishop of Autun, reforming his clergy and religious.

He fell foul of Ebroin, mayor of the palace, who had him blinded and tortured, and finally put to death in 678.

The miracles

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.

Why that counted as sanctity

A reforming bishop who died a martyr at the hands of a tyrant.
