Who they were
Leonardo Murialdo was born in Turin on 26 October 1828, eighth child of a simple family, and was educated by the Piarists at Savona. He was ordained on 20 September 1851.
In the lively charitable Turin of his day, he founded the Pious Society of St Joseph so that abandoned children could know faith and Christian charity, and promoted works of charity until his death on 30 March 1900.
