Who they were
Leopoldo da Gaiche was born Giovanni Croci at Gaiche, in the Diocese of Perugia, Italy, in 1732. At eighteen, in 1751, he received the Franciscan habit at the friary of Cibottola and took the name Leopoldo; he was ordained priest in 1757.
He became known for Lenten preaching that brought many conversions, served for ten years from 1786 as a papal missionary in the Papal States, and founded a retreat house at Monteluco near Spoleto. During the Napoleonic occupation he served as a parish priest. He died on 15 April 1815, aged 83, and Leo XIII beatified him on 12 March 1893.
