Ælfwold II of Sherborne

Who they were

Alfwold, a monk of Winchester, became Bishop of Sherborne in 1045. He gave great example by his frugal life, in contrast to the riotous feasting of the time.

Devoted to St Swithun and St Cuthbert, whose shrine he visited on pilgrimage, he died in 1058 while singing the antiphon of St Cuthbert.

The miracles

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
