Liborius of Le Mans

Who they were

Liborius was one of the first bishops of Le Mans, probably the fourth, elected in 348; tradition says he governed for 49 years, and St Martin of Tours was at his funeral.

In 835 his successor Aldric dedicated an altar to him in the new cathedral, and in 836 Bishop Badurad of Paderborn sent to Le Mans for his relics; three accounts of the journey record miracles as they passed. Le Mans and Paderborn are twinned in his honour.

The miracles

There was never a formal cause: Liborius has been honoured as a saint since his death. The miracles recorded at the translation of his relics were never formally examined.

Why that counted as sanctity

Liborius shepherded his Church for half a century in its first age, and his memory now unites two cities in France and Germany.
