Who they were
Lorcán Ua Tuathail, son of a Leinster chief, was taken hostage at ten, then studied thirteen years at the monastery of Glendalough, where in 1154 he was unanimously chosen abbot. In humility he declined the See of Glendalough.
In 1162 he became Archbishop of Dublin, the first native Irishman in that see, and set about many reforms. Travelling to plead with King Henry II on behalf of the Irish king, he died at Eu in Normandy on 14 November 1180.
