Luis Suárez Velasco

Who they were

Luis Suárez Velasco was born at Pelúgano on 29 January 1897, entered the Order at Almagro, made perpetual vows and was ordained priest in 1924 after studies in Rome and at the Biblical School in Jerusalem. He was confessor to the novices and master of the lay brothers when he was killed in 1936; Pope Francis beatified him on 18 June 2022.

As a martyr he was raised to the altars without a miracle.

Why that counted as sanctity

He was put to death in 1936 in the persecution in Spain, and the Church recognised his death as martyrdom.
