Who they were
Madeleine-Sophie Barat was born at Joigny, near Auxerre, on 13 December 1779.
In Paris in 1800 she founded the Society of the Sacred Heart to educate girls, especially of the upper classes, always adding classes for poor children to her schools. She died in 1865 aged 86.
