Who they were
Mamerto Esquiú was born on 11 May 1826 at San José de Piedra Blanca, in the province of Catamarca, Argentina. He became a Franciscan, was ordained in 1848, and taught in the seminary of Catamarca; esteemed for his integrity, he was elected to his province's legislature and worked for peace and concord in public life, and was a celebrated preacher.
He became Bishop of Córdoba, and died on 10 January 1883 at Posta del Suncho, Argentina.
The miracles
A baby girl — San Miguel de Tucumán, Argentina — January 2016
A girl born prematurely on 20 November 2015 developed acute bone infection that became chronic, with septic arthritis, in her leg; she had several operations, and by early January 2016 needed further surgery that was never done. Her surgeon gave her mother a holy card with a relic of Fray Mamerto, and from 14 January the mother placed it on the baby's leg and prayed with the family. An X-ray later that month showed she had healed.
Why that counted as sanctity
The case of a baby girl was examined by the Church's doctors and theologians and approved as a miracle on 19 June 2020, opening the way to beatification. Beatification followed on September 2021.
