Manuel Fernández Pereira

Who they were

Manuel Fernández Pereira was born in Lisbon on 30 September 1878, studied philosophy and a year of theology at the seminary of Tui, entered the Order of Preachers and was ordained priest in 1901. He had been provincial prior and novice master and was serving as provincial bursar when he was killed in 1936; Pope Francis beatified him on 18 June 2022.

As a martyr he was raised to the altars without a miracle.

Why that counted as sanctity

He was put to death in 1936 in the persecution in Spain, and the Church recognised his death as martyrdom.
