Manuel Luque Ramos

Who they were

Manuel Luque Ramos was born at Marchena near Seville on 6 March 1893 and worked as errand-man and sacristan for the Poor Clare nuns, living with his widowed mother near the monastery. On 18 July 1936 he stood in the way of a group of revolutionaries trying to enter the church during Mass; arrested the next day and shot, he died in the hospital at Marchena on 22 July 1936. Pope Francis beatified him on 18 November 2023.

As a martyr he was raised to the altars without a miracle.

Why that counted as sanctity

He barred the way to men who tried to break into the church during Mass, and was shot for it.
