Born at Pé de Cão in the parish of Olaia near Torres Novas, he was ordained in 1899, made bishop of Portalegre in 1916 and then coadjutor and Archbishop of Évora from 1920 until 1955, restructuring the seminaries, making many pastoral visits and bringing religious congregations into the archdiocese.
