Who they were
María Maravillas Pidal y Chico de Guzmán was born in Madrid on 4 November 1891. She wanted to belong to God from childhood and spent her youth helping the needy. Drawn by St Teresa of Jesus and St John of the Cross, she entered the Carmel of El Escorial on 12 October 1919.
A Discalced Carmelite, she founded many monasteries in Spain and India, joining contemplative life to active charity. She died at the Carmel of La Aldehuela on 11 December 1974, saying: 'What happiness to die a Carmelite!'
