Who they were
Marcelo Spínola y Maestre was born on the island of San Fernando, Cádiz, on 14 January 1835 of noble families. A lawyer from 1855, he gave free help to the poor; he then left his profession, entered the seminary in Seville and was ordained in 1864.
As Archbishop of Seville he founded workers' circles for their social advancement, fought for truth and justice and opened his house to the needy.
