Who they were
María Antonia Vergara Melgar, of Puente Genil, was born on 9 May 1867 and was one of the lay women of the diocese of Córdoba put to death in the persecution of the Church in Spain, suffering martyrdom on 23 July 1936. She was beatified on 16 October 2021 by Pope Francis among Juan Elías Medina and 126 companions of the diocese of Córdoba.
