Maria Bernarda Bütler
Franciscan missionary (1848-1924)
Feast: 19 May (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
Verena Bütler was born and baptised at Auw, in Aargau, Switzerland, on 28 May 1848, fourth of eight children of modest but exemplary farming parents. She took her vows at 21.
At forty she received a missionary call and went to Ecuador and then Colombia, where she founded the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians. Her mission was marked by the Cross; as a true Franciscan she served above all the spiritual and material needs of the poor, her favourites. When she died, the parish priest of Cartagena cathedral announced: 'This morning a saint died in this city.'
