Who they were
María López de Rivas was born of a noble family at Tartanedo, Guadalajara, on 18 August 1560. Her father died when she was four, leaving her a considerable fortune, and she was raised by her grandparents and uncles at Molina de Aragón.
A Discalced Carmelite at Toledo, she was novice mistress eight times, and also sacristan, infirmarian, subprioress and prioress. Always humble and patient, she united herself body and soul to the Passion of the Lord. She died on 13 September 1640.
