Who they were
María de la Concepción Barrecheguren, 'Conchita', was born in Granada on 27 November 1905. Her health was fragile from childhood, and doctors advised against her going to school. She lived the Christian virtues heroically despite illness, and made pilgrimages, among them to Lisieux, where she did not ask to be cured of her stomach illness but to be given tuberculosis, the illness St Thérèse had borne.
She coughed up blood for the first time on 29 October 1926, and died in Granada on 13 May 1927, aged 22.
The miracles
A two-year-old girl — Alicante, Spain — March 2014
On 28 February 2014 a two-year-old girl developed flu-like symptoms; at the University General Hospital of Alicante she was diagnosed on 4 March with toxic shock syndrome from streptococcus A, with multiple organ failure. From 5 March, while she was in intensive care, her sisters prayed to Conchita and a novena was said, joined by her parents and grandparents, and a medal of Conchita was put in the soft toy beside her bed. She recovered.
Why that counted as sanctity
The case of a two-year-old girl was examined by the Church's doctors and theologians and approved as a miracle on 21 May 2022, opening the way to beatification.
