Who they were
María Josefa Sancho de Guerra was born at Vitoria, Spain, on 7 September 1842, eldest daughter of a chair-maker, and was baptised the next day. Her father died when she was seven, and her mother prepared her for First Communion.
As Mother María Josefa of the Heart of Jesus she founded the Servants of Jesus of Charity, trained above all to care for the sick and the poor.
