Who they were
Maria Velotti was born at Soccavo, in Naples, on 16 November 1826, and was orphaned of both parents at four. She founded the Franciscan Adorers of the Holy Cross, taking the name Maria Luigia of the Blessed Sacrament, to educate girls and care for the sick, the old and the disabled; St Ludovico da Casoria and other founders of her day valued her greatly.
After years of illness she died at Casoria on 3 September 1886.
The miracles
A father of a family — Casoria, Italy — December 1926
On 19 December 1926 a man of nearly thirty fell ill with high fever and severe pain; it was pneumonia of the right lung with blood poisoning. On 27 December, on a doctor's suggestion, his wife prayed to Mother Maria Luigia, whose body had been moved to the chapel of her congregation's mother house the day before. On 28 December he began unexpectedly to improve, and went on to recover completely.
Why that counted as sanctity
The case of a father of a family was examined by the Church's doctors and theologians and approved as a miracle on 11 December 2019, opening the way to beatification.
