Who they were
Mariana de Paredes y Flores was born at Quito on 31 October 1618 of a noble family of Spanish origin. At ten she bound herself by vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, and lived in fervent prayer, contemplation and astonishing austerity.
A Franciscan tertiary, she gave herself to Christ and her strength to the poor indigenous people and Black people of Quito. She died in 1645, the year an earthquake and then plague struck the city.
