Who they were
Mariano Arciero was born at Contursi on 26 February 1707 to hard-working, devout peasants and helped tend the flock as a child. At eight he went into service with a young nobleman, Emanuele Parisio, who, becoming a priest, took him to Naples as his page.
Ordained, he threw himself into the apostolate with ardent zeal; after twenty years he returned to Naples and continued his work, famed for wisdom and virtue. He died, as he had foretold, at four in the afternoon of 16 February 1788, aged 81.
