Who they were
Mariano de la Mata Aparicio was born on 31 December 1905 at Puebla de Valdavia, Spain, into a deeply Christian family. Like three of his brothers he joined the Augustinians in 1921, receiving the habit from Blessed Anselmo Polanco, and was ordained in 1930.
An Augustinian missionary in Brazil, his greatest work was the spiritual care of more than 200 'Workshops of Charity of St Rita' in São Paulo.
