Marie-Azélie Guérin Martin

Who they were

Marie-Azélie Guérin was born on 23 December 1831 at Saint-Denis-sur-Sarthon, excelled at needle lace, and married Louis Martin, by whom she had nine children, four of whom died in infancy while the five surviving daughters all entered the cloister, among them Saint Thérèse of Lisieux; she died of a severe cancer in 1877. She was beatified on 19 October 2008 by Pope Benedict XVI and canonised with her husband on 18 October 2015 by Pope Francis.

The miracles

The cause presented the healing of the child Pietro Schilirò of Monza, who on 25 May 2002 fell into grave danger of his life from a severe failure of breathing.

Why that counted as sanctity

The decree describes their marriage as a singular witness of family and married holiness, joining faith and prayer to business, generous care of the poor and greatness of heart in trouble.
