Who they were
Alphonsine Anuarite Nengapeta was born at Wamba, in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo, on 29 December 1939, to a pagan family, and spent her whole life in Upper Zaire. She seemed to have no exceptional gifts.
A Sister of the Holy Family, Sister Marie-Clémentine, she was arrested with other sisters during the civil war. She urged them to keep vigil and pray, and firmly rejected the lustful demands of the soldiers' commander, who killed her in a fit of rage on 1 December 1964.
