Who they were

Marie Guyart was born at Tours on 28 October 1599; at seven, in a dream, she said 'yes' to the Lord who asked her to belong to him. At seventeen, though drawn to the cloister, she married the silk master Claude Martin at her parents' wish. Widowed at nineteen with a six-month-old son, she wound up his failing business and later ran her brother-in-law's transport firm.

Entrusting her son to her sister, she became an Ursuline and opened a house of the order in Canada, where she did many great works.

The miracles

She was later canonised by equivalent canonisation under Pope Francis (thanksgiving Mass 12 October 2014).

Why that counted as sanctity

A widow and businesswoman who became a mystic and a founder of the Church in Canada.
