Mark Barkworth

Who they were

Mark Barkworth, of Lincolnshire, was converted at Douai in 1594 and ordained at Valladolid in 1599; on the way to England he was made a Benedictine oblate. Arrested on arrival, he was held in Newgate and Bridewell.

He faced his examinations with fearlessness and gaiety, and stayed 'very cheerful' in the underground dungeon. On a bitterly cold day in Lent he went to Tyburn singing the Easter anthem, and was executed on 27 February 1601 with St Anne Line.

As a martyr he was raised to the altars without a miracle.
