Who they were
The Roman Martyrology for 5 July records that at Wexford in Ireland the blessed Matthew Lambert, Robert Meyler, Edward Cheevers and Patrick Cavanagh, martyrs, the first a baker and the others sailors, were hanged and then disembowelled under Queen Elizabeth I for their loyalty to the Church of Rome and for the help they gave to Catholics; of these he was the baker named first. The Acta Apostolicae Sedis record that Pope John Paul II beatified the seventeen Irish martyrs on 27 September 1992.
