Matthias the Apostle

Who they were

Matthias was not one of the original Twelve. After the Ascension, Peter asked the disciples to choose, from those who had been with Jesus from His baptism by John to His Ascension, a witness to the Resurrection to take the place of Judas. Two were proposed, Joseph Barsabbas and Matthias; they prayed, cast lots, and the lot fell on Matthias (Acts 1).

Nothing more is known of him for certain. Eusebius of Caesarea counted him among the seventy-two disciples.

The miracles

There was never a formal cause: Matthias has been honoured as an apostle since the earliest Church.

Why that counted as sanctity

Matthias had followed Christ faithfully and unnoticed from the beginning, and was chosen by God, through the prayer of the Church, to be a witness of the Resurrection in the place of the one who betrayed Him.
